How to Hang Lighting in a Marquee or Stretch Tent (Without Built-In Fixtures)

“How do I install lighting if my marquee doesn’t have any built-in fittings?”
The good news is that most professional event tents—including stretch tents, StarShade tents and bell tents—are actually easier to light than many people realise.
With a little planning, you can create everything from an intimate wedding reception to a vibrant festival space without permanently modifying your tent.
1. Use the structure that’s already there
Unlike permanent buildings, event tents don’t need ceiling fixtures.
Instead, lighting is usually attached to:
- central poles
- aluminium framework
- ridge poles
- tension cables
- perimeter poles
- suspension cables installed specifically for lighting
The important point is that the structure carries the weight—not the electrical cable itself.
2. Festoon lighting

4. Fairy lights
Fairy lights remain one of the easiest solutions.
Wrap them around:
- poles
- guy ropes
- entranceways
- floral installations
- timber furniture
Because LEDs generate very little heat, they’re ideal for decorative use.
5. Uplighting
Professional event companies often avoid hanging everything overhead.
Instead they place battery-powered LED uplights around the inside edge of the marquee.
These wash the canvas ceiling with warm light, making the whole tent glow without guests seeing the fixtures themselves.
6. Layer your lighting
The best events rarely rely on a single light source.
