Traveller tents are manufactured from Tentex® PC28, a breathable polycotton fabric weighing 285 g/m² before coating. The combination of cotton and polyester creates a canvas that is comfortable and breathable while remaining practical for campers who regularly transport, pitch and pack away their tent.

The fabric receives a water-based treatment to improve resistance to water, UV exposure, mould and rot while retaining its breathability.

Traveller tents also include a waterproof zipped-in bathtub groundsheet. The raised edges help prevent surface water from entering the tent, while the zip allows the groundsheet to be removed when required.

What is a ProTech bell tent?

The ProTech is CanvasCamp’s premium recreational bell tent and has been a global benchmark for Sibley bell tents for approximately 15 years.

It is made from Tentex® C32, a heavier-duty 100% cotton canvas weighing approximately 360 g/m² after treatment. Natural cotton is exceptionally breathable, helping to create a comfortable internal environment in both warm and cool weather.

The ProTech is designed for campers who expect more from their tent: more ventilation, greater durability and additional flexibility.

Its standout feature is the integrated 360-degree mesh wall. The solid canvas sidewalls can be unzipped, rolled up and secured, leaving the mesh wall in place. This transforms the tent into an airy, insect-protected space while retaining the roof, groundsheet and classic bell tent structure.

The biggest difference: the canvas

One of the primary differences between the two ranges is their canvas composition.

Traveller: practical polycotton

The Traveller’s Tentex® PC28 polycotton combines natural cotton with polyester. It remains breathable and comfortable but is designed with mobility, ease of use and value in mind.

It is ideal for a tent that will be regularly transported, pitched for a holiday or weekend and then packed away.

ProTech: premium 100% cotton

The ProTech uses heavier Tentex® C32 100% cotton canvas. Cotton is naturally breathable and helps regulate the environment inside the tent by allowing heat and moisture vapour to escape.

This can reduce condensation and create the wonderfully comfortable atmosphere for which traditional canvas tents are known.

The heavier-duty fabric and construction make the ProTech better suited to more frequent use, although every canvas tent still requires correct pitching, cleaning, drying and maintenance.

Ventilation and the 360-degree mesh wall

This is the feature most likely to determine which tent is right for you.

Both models have mesh-protected windows, doors and ventilation points. Both also allow the canvas sidewalls to be rolled up, transforming the bell tent into an open shade structure.

The ProTech goes a step further with its integrated 360-degree mesh wall. When the solid canvas walls are rolled away, the mesh perimeter remains zipped to the groundsheet.

Both tents are manufactured from quality, repairable and retreatable materials. Their actual lifespan will depend heavily on climate, UV exposure, pitching conditions, maintenance and how often they are used.

CanvasCamp estimates an average period before significant maintenance may be required of approximately:

• Traveller: 20–40 weeks of accumulated use
• ProTech: 30–50 weeks of accumulated use

These figures refer to total usage weeks, not necessarily consecutive weeks or the tent’s complete lifespan. A tent used for several weeks each year, packed away completely dry and properly maintained can provide many years of service.

Australian UV levels, humidity, rainfall and coastal conditions can substantially affect canvas, so these figures should be treated as general guidance rather than a guarantee.

Using a bell tent protector can help shield the canvas from UV exposure, rain, tree sap, bird droppings and falling debris, potentially extending the time between cleaning and maintenance.

Are the Traveller and ProTech suitable for long-term pitching?

The Traveller and ProTech are fundamentally camping tents rather than permanent buildings.

The Traveller is best suited to recreational use, where it is pitched for holidays or shorter stays and stored clean and dry between trips.

The ProTech’s heavier cotton canvas makes it a stronger option for regular camping, extended holidays and some seasonal glamping use. However, leaving any canvas tent pitched continuously changes the level of maintenance required and may shorten its lifespan.

For intensive commercial glamping, accommodation businesses or extended installations, we generally recommend considering the Apex Professional Series. The Apex has been specifically engineered for more demanding, long-term and professional applications.

Whichever model you choose, a tent used for extended periods should be regularly inspected, cleaned and retreated as required. It should never be stored damp, and early signs of mould or water penetration should be addressed promptly.

Can you install a stove in both models?

Yes. Both Traveller and ProTech bell tents can be fitted with a compatible wood-burning tent stove using the appropriate stove exit, heatproof mat, flue components and safety clearances.

A stove exit can be installed in the location best suited to your layout. However, due to the limited internal space, we do not recommend installing a wood-burning stove in a 3m bell tent.

Always follow the stove manufacturer’s instructions and appropriate fire-safety precautions. Never leave a burning stove unattended.

Do both tents use the same accessories?

Many accessories are available for both ranges, depending on the tent size. These can include:

• Inner tents
• Bell tent protectors and double roofs
• Additional groundsheets or footprints
• Coir and polypropylene matting

An inner tent is particularly useful for families, as it can create separate sleeping areas while adding privacy and protection from insects.
